What's Coming: The WhatsApp System Being Built for ISTCKonnect
Some of you will remember a WhatsApp number — 8198017230. If you messaged it last year, an AI replied.
0172 is the STD code for Chandigarh. 30 is CSIO — the campus on Sector 30 where ISTC stands. That number wasn't random. If you caught it, you understood something about what ISTCKonnect is trying to do: stay rooted in the institution while building something modern on top of it.
The AI that answered wasn't sophisticated. It could handle basic questions, acknowledge that someone reached out, tell you who we are. Just enough to confirm the hypothesis we needed to test: ISTCians would message a WhatsApp number if they had a reason to.
We got the answer. Then we paused. Not abandonment — the space between a proof of concept and something worth building properly. That space is over.
Why the old system wasn't enough
A number that responds to messages is useful. But it's passive — it only activates when someone reaches out first. And most of what ISTCKonnect needs to do for its community is the opposite of passive.
Think about what actually matters in a community like ours — spread across 60+ years of batches, across cities, industries, and continents. The moments that matter aren't the ones where someone is browsing the platform at leisure. They're the urgent ones. Someone needs blood. A dare has been posted on The Forge. An event needs to reach 500 people by morning. The system that waits to be asked doesn't solve any of those problems.
What we needed was infrastructure that could initiate — reach the right ISTCian, at the right moment, without anyone manually sending 500 messages.
What's been built for Version 2
The new system runs on Official WhatsApp Business API (WABA) — the same infrastructure used by hospitals, financial institutions, and verified businesses for policy-compliant communication at scale. No grey-market workarounds. No ban risk. When a message arrives from ISTCKonnect, it's verified, sanctioned, and from us.
On top of that foundation, four specific workflows are being built:
Blood network alerts. When an ISTCian or their family needs blood urgently, the system broadcasts to matched donors — by blood group, by city. Not a group blast to everyone. A targeted, immediate alert to the people who can actually help. This is the iCare system doing what it was built for, delivered on WhatsApp instantly.
Forge notifications. When a new dare is posted on The Forge — a real engineering problem open to verified ISTCians — the system notifies relevant members on WhatsApp. Not everyone. The right people. The Watchman Project is live right now. The next dare will find its solvers faster because of this.
Events. Alumni meetups, industry sessions, Forge showcases, batch reunions. The problem has always been reach. An event announcement going directly to opted-in members' WhatsApp changes that entirely — not buried in a group chat, not in an inbox no one checks. One system, 508+ members, zero manual forwarding.
Community alerts and opportunities. Job openings, collaboration requests, industry updates — delivered to members who've opted in. Automated workflows route the right information to the right segment. A job in industrial automation goes to engineers in that domain, not to everyone.
The AI piece
Version 1 had a bot that answered questions. Version 2 has agents — AI trained specifically on ISTCKonnect's content, platform structure, and community context. The difference is the difference between a receptionist and someone who actually knows the place.
When an ISTCian messages at midnight asking about the Forge, or how to join iCare, or whether their batch has representation — the agent knows. It doesn't send a generic reply. It sends a useful one. These agents handle queries 24/7 inside automated workflows — something that wouldn't be possible to staff manually for a platform that isn't built for revenue.
This is possible because ISTCKonnect's WhatsApp infrastructure is now built on the same platform that powers FIDUS FLO — a WhatsApp automation system running on our own businesses — Bagful, The French Skool, Fidus Realty — for over a year before offering it externally. ISTCKonnect gets the benefit of everything learned operating it on real businesses, applied to a community context.
What this is not
It is not a spam system. Every message that goes out is triggered by something meaningful — a blood need, a dare, an event, an opportunity surfaced. An ISTCian's WhatsApp is a trusted space. We will not abuse it.
It is also not finished. This is a relaunch, not a completion. We are building in public, with the community, for the community. If something doesn't work the way it should — tell me. Directly. That's what the Founder's Desk is for.
What's next
The system is rolling out in stages. If you're already a verified ISTCKonnect member, you'll receive an onboarding message on WhatsApp when your tier of the rollout goes live. If you haven't completed your profile yet — now is the time. Incomplete profiles won't be included in targeted notifications, by design.
