How Small Is a Micron? Why Toolmakers Work 14× Finer Than a Hair #Shorts
Microns · Episode 1
0.005 mm. That's the gap between a part that fits and a part that's scrap.
• 1 micron (µm) = 0.001 mm
• A4 paper is about 100 µm, a human hair about 70 µm, a red blood cell about 8 µm
• Precision tool-room tolerances are often ±5 µm, 14 times finer than a hair
• Steel grows about 12 µm per metre for every 1 °C. A 100 mm part, 5 °C warmer, grows 6 µm. That's why measuring rooms are kept at 20 °C.
• Steel rule 0.5 mm → vernier 0.02 mm → micrometer 0.01 mm → digital micrometer 0.001 mm
At ISTC (Indo Swiss Training Centre, Chandigarh), measurement starts in year one, inside CSIR-CSIO, India's national laboratory for scientific instruments.
