Made in a Minute, Built Over Months: The Mould Behind a Plastic Chair #Shorts
The Machine Behind It · 01: the plastic chair
This chair was made in about a minute. The tool that made it took months.
• Injection moulding in four steps: melt (about 230 °C), inject, cool, eject
• The real product is the mould: hardened tool steel, cooling channels, ejector pins, a parting line
• It's cut about 2% bigger than the chair, because plastic shrinks as it cools
• Leave a gap of a few hundredths of a mm and hot plastic leaks out
• Buckets, phone cases, toothbrushes, helmets, crates: almost every plastic thing you own came out of a mould
Someone built that mould: a die & mould maker.
Two ISTC courses lead here, after Class 10, AICTE approved:
• Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Tool & Die), 3 years
• Advanced Diploma in Die & Mould Making, 4 years
