Wire EDM: Cutting Hardened Steel Without Touching It | One Machine #Shorts
One Machine, 90 Seconds · 01: wire EDM
This machine cuts hardened steel with a wire 0.25 mm thick. It never touches the metal.
• Wire EDM = electrical discharge machining
• A brass wire runs between two guides, in deionised water
• Voltage jumps the tiny gap as a spark. Each spark melts a speck of steel, and the water flushes it away
• Thousands of sparks a second trace the shape
• Hardness doesn't matter, only that the metal conducts. So steel is hardened first, then cut, with no warping after
• It can hold about ±5 µm. An inside corner can never be sharper than the wire
Its work: punch and die sets, extrusion dies, gear profiles, medical implants, aerospace parts, mould inserts.
The people who run it are toolmakers. Two ISTC courses lead here, after Class 10, AICTE approved:
• Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Tool & Die), 3 years
• Advanced Diploma in Die & Mould Making, 4 years
