ISTC Chandigarh vs CTR Ludhiana: Which Is Better for Engineering After 10th?

ISTCKonnect 30 Oct 2026 · 2 views

A fair, sourced comparison of ISTC Chandigarh (CSIR-CSIO) and CTR Ludhiana (MSME): admission route, courses, approval, fees and hostel for Class 10 students choosing an engineering diploma.

Short answer: ISTC Chandigarh (CSIR-CSIO) and CTR Ludhiana (MSME Technology Centre) are both government-backed, workshop-heavy places to study engineering after 10th. ISTC admits through its own entrance exam to four AICTE-approved programmes (180 seats); CTR Ludhiana admits to its AICTE-approved diplomas through Punjab State Board (PSBTE&IT) counselling and also runs short skill courses.

Both institutes come from the same idea: train young technicians the way European toolmakers are trained, with long hours on real machines. ISTC was set up in 1963 with Swiss collaboration. CTR Ludhiana was set up with German technical cooperation. If you are a Class 10 student in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, Chandigarh or J&K and you like making things, both deserve a look. This guide compares them fairly, using only what each institute and its admitting body publish.

How admission works

ISTC: you apply online on the CSIR-CSIO portal linked from istc.ac.in, sit a 100-question, 100-minute OMR exam at Class 10 level (Maths, Science, Aptitude, English, GK, with minus 0.25 for wrong answers), and choose a course at counselling in order of rank. In 2026 the form was open from 1 May to 3 June and the exam was on Sunday 5 July. The 2027 dates are expected to follow a similar pattern, based on 2026, but are not announced yet. Details: ISTC entrance exam pattern and important dates.

CTR Ludhiana: diploma seats are filled through the Punjab State Board of Technical Education and Industrial Training (PSBTE&IT) online counselling. You register on the board's portal, take part in counselling rounds, then report to CTR for document checks and fee payment. CTR's 2026 page also lists lateral entry into the second year for students with 10+2 (science or vocational) or a 2-year ITI. Rules, seat matrix and fees are in the PSBTE&IT prospectus for the year, so read it before you decide.

What this means for you: ISTC is one exam you prepare for. CTR follows the Punjab state process, so the board's rules for your category and domicile decide your chances. You can apply to both in the same year.

What you will study

ISTC runs four programmes with a common first year for everyone:

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Tool & Die), 3 years, 60 seats
  • Diploma in Electronics Engineering, 3 years, 60 seats
  • Advanced Diploma in Die & Mould Making, 4 years, 30 seats
  • Advanced Diploma in Mechatronics & Industrial Automation, 4 years, 30 seats

Six to eight weeks of industrial training after the fourth semester is compulsory. See ISTC courses and seats.

CTR Ludhiana lists diploma programmes such as Tool & Die and Mechatronics, and a 3-year Diploma in Computer Science Engineering with admissions open for 2026. It also runs many short courses. Some are open to Class 10 pass students, for example 6-month certificate courses in CNC Turning and CNC Milling (Rs 45,000 each) and a 12-month Condensed Course in Tool and Die Making (Rs 1,15,000), as listed on its long-term courses page. These short courses are skill certificates, not AICTE diplomas, so check what you need them for (a quick job skill or a qualification for lateral entry and government posts).

Cost

ISTC's 2026 brochure lists a training fee of Rs 17,500 per semester plus a Rs 2,500 student welfare fund each semester. The first-semester total was Rs 26,000 for day scholars and Rs 34,150 for hostellers, including one-time and refundable deposits. Our rough estimate for tuition and welfare across a 3-year diploma is about Rs 1.2 lakh, before hostel, tools and uniform. Full table: ISTC fee structure.

CTR Ludhiana does not publish its diploma fee on its website. The fee for a diploma seat allotted through PSBTE&IT counselling is given in the board's prospectus. Compare the full course cost, not just one semester.

Which one fits you

Choose ISTC if:

  • You want electronics or mechatronics alongside mechanical, with a 4-year advanced option.
  • You are confident in Class 10 Maths and Science and are ready for a competitive entrance exam.
  • You want the CSIR-CSIO laboratory setting and a small intake of 180.

Choose CTR Ludhiana if:

  • You live in Punjab and want to go through the state board counselling you already know.
  • You want tool and die or mechatronics close to Ludhiana's manufacturing industry.
  • You want a short, job-focused CNC or tool room certificate rather than a full diploma.

Many students apply to both and decide after results. Before you choose, check AICTE approval of the exact course, total cost, hostel position, and where recent graduates are working.
