Types of diploma institutes
- State government polytechnics: many seats, low fees, admission through state boards or counselling. Quality of workshops varies.

Where ISTC fits
ISTC was set up in 1963 with Swiss collaboration and functions within CSIR-CSIO, a national laboratory. It offers four AICTE-approved programmes (180 seats) in tool and die, die and mould making, electronics, and mechatronics and industrial automation. Admission is through its own entrance exam. Every student does a common first year, industrial training is compulsory, and recruiters include Maruti Suzuki, Siemens, Honda, Titan and Rockwell Automation.
