Short answer: ISTC Chandigarh and NTTF are both workshop-first places to study engineering after 10th, and both trace their roots to Swiss technical training. ISTC is a government institute (CSIR-CSIO) with four AICTE-approved programmes and 180 seats in one Chandigarh campus; NTTF is an independent training foundation with centres in seven states outside North India, whose diplomas it says are recognised by NCVET, MSDE and NOCN UK.
If you are a Class 10 student in North India searching for a tool and die, electronics or mechatronics diploma, both names will come up. This guide compares them fairly, using only what each institute publishes, so you can decide what fits your goals, your budget and how far from home you want to study.
ISTCKonnect is the independent alumni network of ISTC. We are not the institute and we do not conduct admissions.

Two institutes with Swiss roots
Both institutes follow the European idea of training technicians on real machines, not only in classrooms. ISTC was set up in 1963 with the Swiss Foundation for Technical Assistance and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. It works within CSIR-CSIO, a national laboratory for scientific instruments.
NTTF grew from a training institute in Nettur, Kerala, set up with Swiss church support, and has expanded into a network of centres. On its programme pages NTTF says about 65% of learning is hands-on training.
The difference today is scale and setting. ISTC is one small campus inside a government laboratory. NTTF is a multi-campus organisation with many diploma options, including IT and data science.
How admission works
ISTC: you apply online on the CSIR-CSIO portal linked from istc.ac.in, write a 100-question, 100-minute OMR exam at Class 10 level (Maths, Science, Aptitude, English and GK, with minus 0.25 for a wrong answer), and choose a course at counselling in order of rank. In 2026 the form was open from 1 May to 3 June and the exam was held on Sunday 5 July. The 2027 dates are expected to follow a similar pattern, based on 2026, but have not been announced. See the ISTC entrance exam pattern and important dates.
NTTF: you apply on its website or at a campus and write the NTTF entrance exam; NTTF says selection may also include an interview or counselling. Its Tool Engineering page asks for a Class 10 pass with Mathematics and sets a maximum age of 24. NTTF also takes students after Class 12 or ITI through lateral entry, with a bridge programme for some.
What this means for you: these are separate processes, so you can apply to both in the same year. In 2026 the ISTC exam was held in Chandigarh, and in New Delhi only if at least 50 candidates chose it; check where NTTF holds its exam for your year.
What you will study
ISTC runs four programmes with a common first year for everyone:
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Tool & Die), 3 years, 60 seats
- Diploma in Electronics Engineering, 3 years, 60 seats
- Advanced Diploma in Die & Mould Making, 4 years, 30 seats
- Advanced Diploma in Mechatronics & Industrial Automation, 4 years, 30 seats
Six to eight weeks of industrial training after the fourth semester is compulsory. See ISTC courses and seats.
NTTF lists 3-year diplomas including Tool Engineering & Digital Manufacturing, Mechatronics Engineering & Smart Factory, Electronics & Embedded Systems, Electrical & Electronics Systems, Automation & Robotics, Computer Technology & IT Infrastructure, and Information Technology & Data Science. NTTF describes them as having multiple entry and exit options. Not every course runs at every campus, so check the campus list on each programme page.
Recognition: ask what you need it for
This is the most important check for any diploma.
- ISTC: the 2026 Information Brochure states that all ISTC courses are approved by AICTE, New Delhi.
- NTTF: NTTF states that its diplomas are recognised by NCVET (the national vocational education regulator), MSDE, NSDC and NOCN UK, and formally recognised by some state governments, including Kerala and Odisha.
Neither kind of recognition is better for every purpose. If you plan lateral entry to B.Tech in Punjab, Haryana or another state, or a government post that names a specific qualification, read that state's or recruiter's rules and confirm your diploma is accepted before you join.
Cost and living
ISTC's 2026 brochure lists a training fee of Rs 17,500 per semester plus a Rs 2,500 student welfare fund each semester. The first-semester total was Rs 26,000 for day scholars and Rs 34,150 for hostellers, including one-time and refundable deposits. Our rough estimate for tuition and welfare over a 3-year diploma is about Rs 1.2 lakh, before hostel, tools and uniform. Full table: ISTC fee structure.
NTTF lists its fee per semester in its brochure and prospectus rather than on the programme page. Compare the full course cost, plus travel and living costs. For a student from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal or J&K, the nearest NTTF centres listed on its website are far from home, which affects both cost and family support.
ISTC's 2026 brochure lists on-campus hostel accommodation for boys only; girl students usually arrange PG accommodation in Chandigarh. NTTF says most of its centres have hostels for both boys and girls. See ISTC hostel.
Which one fits you
Choose ISTC if:
- You want an AICTE-approved diploma in tool and die, electronics or mechatronics, with a 4-year advanced option.
- You live in North India and prefer to study in Chandigarh.
- You are ready for a competitive entrance exam for a small intake of 180.
Choose NTTF if:
- You want a wider range of courses, including IT, data science or electrical.
- You live near one of its centres, or a hostel for girls on campus matters to your family.
- You are entering after Class 12 or ITI, since ISTC does not offer lateral entry into its diplomas.
Whatever you choose, check four things before paying any fee: the recognition you need, the total cost, the hostel position, and where graduates of the last few years are working.
